The aim of this procedure is to try to reduce severe nerve pain symptoms by infusing a concentrated dose of the drug intravenously under close monitoring to attempt to reduce pain symptoms.
This is carried out as an intravenous infusion for a minimum of one hour. The aim of the treatment is to desensitise nerves that cannot be treated locally by injection or when oral therapy is ineffective, not tolerated or not feasible because of contra-indications. It is carried out as a day case procedure in a theatre environment with regular blood pressure and ECG monitoring. If beneficial, it can be repeated as required.
After your treatment
We suggest that someone drive you home after these procedures. You may feel a little light headed following the procedure, but this usually passes quickly. The procedure is usually well-tolerated but may need repeating after a medical review, which will take place in the clinic in four to six weeks.
